In the days of yore, concrete piles were utilized to make railroad ties, and also for mining. Today, this material has grown to become a primary material for any type of heavy equipment. For instance, the Los Angeles River Rehabilitation Project utilizes this technology to help them with overcrossing the Westwood Boulevard Freeway. To see this in action is quite amazing. When you happen to drive down the boulevard, you will find the train yard across the street from the boulevard is primarily comprised of huge metal beams, and these are being supported by concrete piles!

Another example of heavy-duty machinery being used to execute major projects involve the Los Angeles River widening project, which is an enormous undertaking involving the Los Angeles River levee system. When the levee was constructed back in the 1920s, this project included the digging of the nine-mile levee tunnel, as well as massive over crossing projects, and the raising of the levee itself. If you have ever driven on any part of the California State University campus, then you might notice that there is a light-filled circle of woods that run along the perimeter. This is the location of the university’s athletic fields. This circular area is referred to as the footprint, and is where the majority of the school’s athletic fields are located. This particular footprint is made up of what is known as “stamp concrete” and is composed of a hard material that is utilized to create the outline of the field. When this stamp concrete is poured into the various parts of the field, it becomes very strong, and as a result, the weight of the entire athletic field is actually spread out evenly.

If you happen to drive through any portion of Southern California, you may notice that a vast section of land exists that includes large amounts of this stamped concrete. A good example of this is the San Gabriel Mountains. Any person that has been driving through this region for any length of time can clearly see the large multitude of overhead drainage pipes that snake their way throughout the mountains. This system of drains actually started out as an underground utility, which meant that the work that had to be done in order to complete the job was extensive. Due to the extreme nature of this particular job, it was necessary for large trucks to be brought in on a frequent basis to complete this work.

One of the largest projects that was carried out in the early twentieth century was the laying of the Los Angeles River levee. It took about two years to complete this job, and as you can see from the pictures of the completed levee, it was not an easy job at all. You see, water had to be controlled in such a way so as not to flood areas that didn’t have proper drainage. Also, with the type of natural vegetation that existed in those parts of Los Angeles, as well as the large number of native species that lived in those areas, there were many concerns that were raised regarding the fact that moving the freeway would cause harm to these delicate plants and animals.

There are many other examples of these jobs that take place in the Los Angeles area. The main freeway project that took place in the middle of this city involved the installation of over four hundred thousand tons of asphalt paving. A very substantial amount of this paved area was taken up by the installation of what are known as spurs, which serve to aid in the stabilization of the roadway when it has to be moved. All of these jobs that take place in the Los Angeles area are necessary for the transportation of people and goods, as well as for the beautification of the neighborhoods that surround the larger cities in the state.
